Norman Lamb Comes Out Fighting In Bid to Save Norfolk's Post Offices

12.00.00am GMT Tue 25th Mar 2008

Norman Lamb MP has today stated that the government's proposed closures of post offices in Norfolk is "disastrous and a death knell for rural communities". He is attending a meeting to discuss the proposed closures with local postmasters, mistresses and the Norwich Rural Community Council, tomorrow evening at Aylsham Town Hall.

"I am committed to fighting these closures, but I am also aware that this 'consultation' exercise looks like a sham. The Government and Post Office Ltd seem determined to close 2,500 post offices come what may. North Norfolk with an elderly population has more remote communities than other parts of Norfolk, yet appears to be losing out more than some other areas".

Norman Lamb pioneered a £2 billion modernisation plan for post offices when he was the Lib Dems DTI spokesman. "My vision for post offices is very different to the depressing withdrawal of services proposed by this Government. I am also writing to the County Council urging them to look at ways of saving Post Offices following the example proposed by Essex County Council."
