PAYMENT BY RESULTS FAILING TO GET THE BEST FOR PATIENTS - LAMB

11.02.36am GMT Mon 18th Feb 2008

Commenting on today's [Thursday] Audit Commission report into Payment by Results in the NHS, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, Norman Lamb said:

"This is another case of Government reforms failing to get the best for patients.

"Payment by results only works when all providers are competing for patients on an equal basis. As it currently stands, areas where the scheme isn't operating, such as mental health, are losing out as money is pulled away towards those areas that do.

"This is distorting the way the NHS is run and means many patients are losing out on vital treatment."
