OVERCROWDING MUST BE TACKLED IN FIGHT AGAINST HOSPITAL INFECTIONS - LAMB

9.11.17am GMT Wed 9th Jan 2008

Commenting on the Government's new infection control strategy published today [Wednesday], Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, Norman Lamb said: "Delivery on these promises will be key. Will the money actually be used for anti-infection measures, such as recruitment of new staff?

"Only this week we saw that the vast majority of hospitals have not begun their deep clean, despite a deadline less than two months away.

"The Government is still unwilling to recognise the role played by hospital overcrowding. Wards around the country are full to bursting point, making it very difficult to isolate patients in event of an outbreak.

"Unless they start to tackle this problem, we are at risk of tinkering round the edges of a very serious problem."
