NHS BUDGET FLUCTUATIONS HITTING STAFF AND PATIENTS - LAMB11.02.38am GMT Thu 22nd Nov 2007 Commenting on reports that the NHS will have a surplus of £1.8billion in 2007/8, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, Norman Lamb MP said: "In the past few years, the NHS has gone from feast to famine and now back to feast. This is the economics of the madhouse." "Do ministers not realise the negative impact this has on staff and patients? Any attempt at long-term planning of services is rendered meaningless." "These wild fluctuations between deficit and surplus are the symptoms of a vastly over-centralised system." "Power should be stripped from Whitehall bureaucrats to empower people with more control over their local health services." The projected NHS surplus was reported in this week's Health Service Journal.
