Lamb heading to The Hague for coastal erosion conference

1.21.00pm GMT Wed 18th Jan 2006

Norman Lamb, Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, will attend the CoastNET Conference at The Hague . Coastal campaigner Malcolm Kerby will also attend. The aim of the conference is to highlight good practice in coastal flood risk and erosion risk management, and the role of local communities in decision-making.

"North Norfolk is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change," says Norman Lamb. "Sea level rise and increased storminess increase the risks to coastal communities in Norfolk from flooding from the sea and from coastal erosion. This conference will discuss how we can adapt to and reduce these risks. It is very important that Norfolk is actively involved in this debate."

The EU-funded Eurosion project set out to assess the risks to the coasts of Europe and to make recommendations regarding management policies for erosion risk. This conference will showcase examples of the issues and solutions at the local level around Europe, and will examine the range of policy options available. An underlying theme of the conference will be on the role of local communities in the development of appropriate solutions.
