Crazy Frog ringtone fine just small change - Lamb

7.02.03pm GMT Wed 21st Dec 2005

Responding to the £40,000 fine issued to MBlox, the company that supplied the Crazy Frog ring tones, by the Independent Committee for the Supervision of Standards of the Telephone Information Services (ICSTIS), Norman Lamb MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow DTI Secretary, said:

"This fine represents small change compared to the estimated £10m profit that the sale of the Crazy Frog ring tone made for its owner Jamba.

"The real underlying concern is that consumers continue to be misled when purchasing mobile phone extras, and current regulations do not effectively target the content providers, which are providing the services and making the more significant

profits.

"There seems to be a clear case for better regulation of both service and content providers in this market in order to protect consumers. I will be writing to Ofcom and ICSTIS challenging them to update the regulations accordingly."
