Norman Lamb has signed up to an Early Day Motion calling on the Government to scrap plans to reduce access to free school transport. The Government plans to end free school transport for children travelling more than 3 miles to school, or 2 miles if the children are under eight.
"How can we say every child has the right to free education then make some children pay to get to school?" Mr Lamb asked. "Government plans mean up to 600,000 children around Britain could end up paying for transport. In particular, children living in rural areas who have to travel some distance to school are being targeted."
"I believe these plans will add thousands more cars to already congested roads which is exactly the opposite of Liberal Democrat transport policy," Mr Lamb added. "Lib Dems believe that free school buses are vital to ensure all children have equal access to education, and to keep the number of cars on the roads down."
The Liberal Democrats have launched a national campaign to stop the Government implementing these plans. You can support the 'Save Our School Buses' campaign online at www.libdems.org.uk/campaigns, or contact your local Lib Dem office.
