Lamb launches Beating Bowel Cancer 'Loud Tie' Campaign

2.43.57pm GMT Thu 22nd Jan 2004

Norman Lamb, the Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, has hosted the launch at the House of Commons of 2004's 'Loud Tie Week' in aid of the charity Beating Bowel Cancer.

The event on Wednesday 21 January, sponsored by BUPA, marked the start of Loud Tie Week which runs from 26-30 January. The annual campaign's aims are to raise awareness of bowel cancer and raise funds to help combat it. Already, an Early Day Motion tabled by Mr Lamb in support has attracted 63 signatures from MPs of all parties.

Last year, Norman Lamb won the campaign's competition among MPs for the loudest tie worn in the House of Commons chamber, and as a result was able to present a cheque for £1,000 to Beating Bowel Cancer. This year's contest is being judged by Guardian columnist and Radio 4 News Quiz chairman Simon Hoggart, who was present at the launch.

"I was delighted to be asked to host the launch of this year's Loud Tie Week," said Norman Lamb.

"This is a fun event, but with a very serious purpose. I decided to take part in the Loud Tie contest last year having lost my brother-in-law to bowel cancer. This week of Loud Tie events across the country helps raise much-needed funds towards research into and the treatment of the condition, as well as keeping the issue in the public consciousness.

"It is good to see that Loud Tie Week 2004 has already received such widespread backing from MPs of all the main parties, and I wish the event and Beating Bowel Cancer every success."
